The PRN Neurophysiologists
PRN Read's team of neurophysiologists are led by a neurologist, fellowship trained and Board Certified in Neurophysiology.
Why is it important to have a Neurophysiologist oversee IOM cases?
Having highly-trained and experienced readers who are monitoring in real-time offers the surgeon, technician and patient not only an additional set of eyes to watch the data, but professional and immediate feedback if any questions should arise. The whole idea of monitoring is to help offset the possibility of an incident by noticing slight changes, giving the surgeon advance notice so there is time to take corrective actions.
- By having a licensed Neurophysiologist monitoring in real-time, the medical liability and risk is shared and the potential threat of litigation is reduced as you are providing the most effective and up-to-date safety measures possible.
- Most IOM technologists are greatly relieved when they know that a professional reader is with them on the case as it shifts a great deal of the support over to the reader. Likewise, most surgeons are greatly comforted knowing that they, too, have the support of another professional virtually live in the OR with them.
- To legally collect the professional reimbursement for most of the primary providers and Medicare, you MUST have a licensed Neurophysiologist who is separate from the surgery group to oversee in real-time and generate a report for medical records.
- Lastly, the American Society of Neurophysiological Monitoring recommends that all intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring be overseen by a clinical neurophysiologist with appropriate training and credentials.

For these and many other reasons, there is a clear trend emerging from both the insurance and legal communities, as well as from credentialing organizations, which is demanding that IOM has credentialed technologists AND experienced and licensed Neurophysiologists overseeing these cases – monitoring in real-time.
